Why Community Is Essential for Seniors
In our modern, digital age, it's easier than ever to feel isolated from the people around you. This tendency has been highlighted and exacerbated by the social distance habits and work-from-home lifestyle that many were forced to adopt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Perhaps no group is more susceptible to loneliness and social isolation than seniors, many of whom are homebound due to mobility issues, lack of transportation, or other factors. And research has shown that loneliness and social isolation in seniors can have serious consequences.
The Benefits of Social Connection
Humans evolved as social creatures, and as we grow older, our social networks become even more essential to our well-being. Here are a few of the reasons why the importance of community can't be understated:
Better Health and Longer Life. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, lonely people are 50% more likely to die prematurely. Loneliness has been associated with a shocking number of physical and mental health disorders, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, depression, and stroke.
Cognitive Function. Another negative side effect of social isolation is an increased risk of cognitive decline. In fact, one study showed that frequent social contact was able to slow the rate of cognitive decline by up to 70%.
Safety. Everyone has accidents, but for seniors, falls or other mishaps can be especially dangerous, particularly if you live alone. Having friends or neighbors who will notice when something goes wrong—for example, if you fall in your home and can't get up, or don't come home after an outing—can be the difference between a minor incident and serious injury, or even death.
Fulfillment. For some individuals, once they've entered retirement and no longer have families to care for, it can be difficult to find meaning in life. Positive social relationships and community engagement activities such as volunteering are great ways for seniors to maintain a sense of purpose and happiness during their golden years.
