Why Community Is Essential for Seniors

In our modern, digital age, it's easier than ever to feel isolated from the people around you. This tendency has been highlighted and exacerbated by the social distance habits and work-from-home lifestyle that many were forced to adopt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Perhaps no group is more susceptible to loneliness and social isolation than seniors, many of whom are homebound due to mobility issues, lack of transportation, or other factors. And research has shown that loneliness and social isolation in seniors can have serious consequences. 

How To Help Seniors Live Independently

Surveys have shown that around 90% of seniors prefer aging in place in their own homes. While everyone's motivations are different, wanting to maintain independence and autonomy frequently factors into the equation for many seniors. 

 However, aging presents a lot of challenges that may complicate that desire for independent senior living. Changes in mobility and cognitive function, lack of transportation, and health issues can all impair an elderly person's ability to perform activities of daily living, but these obstacles are often easily navigable.

What Does In-Home Care for Seniors Look Like?

In-home care services for seniors offer an ideal solution for older adults who prefer to age in place rather than moving into a long-term care facility, but who may need a little extra help as they grow older. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, around 80% of seniors who receive assistance live in private homes rather than care communities or nursing homes. For these individuals, in-home care is often crucial to allowing them to maintain their independence while also ensuring that their needs are met.

Seniors and Transportation

Reliable access to transportation is an essential part of maintaining an independent lifestyle. However, as we age, accessible transportation often becomes more complicated. Factors such as cognitive decline and reduced vision capabilities may eventually render some older adults unable to drive. 

 For seniors in this position, the options aren't always good—in fact, a survey by the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center found that 68% of older adults (over two-thirds!) believe that finding an alternative means of transportation would be difficult if they were no longer able to drive. 

Dangers of Falls for Seniors

For most people, tripping and falling isn't a big deal. The vast majority of the time, we expect to walk away with a scratch, a bruised ego, perhaps a sprain in extreme cases—but all those scenarios are more inconvenient than dangerous for the average person. 

Not so for everyone, however. For elderly adults, falls can be serious, even life-threatening. In 2016, elderly fall statistics indicated that nearly 25,000 individuals aged 75 or older died as a result of falling. And even when they aren't deadly, falls can result in major injuries such as hip fractures, broken bones, and traumatic brain injuries. Falls are particularly dangerous for seniors who live alone or have other underlying health conditions and/or mobility problems that may prevent them from being able to get up easily again.
