Common Health Issues for Seniors
As people age, it's not uncommon for their health to decline as well. Changes in lifestyle, natural decreases in immune function, genetics, and a lifetime's worth of physical wear and tear can all contribute to a higher incidence of health issues for seniors.
Chronic Illnesses in the Elderly
According to the National Council on Aging, 80% of adults aged 65 and over live with at least one chronic disease; 68% have two or more. Some of the more common chronic illnesses for seniors include (but are not limited to):
hypertension
high cholesterol
arthritis
heart disease
diabetes
kidney disease
heart failure
depression
Alzheimer's disease or dementia
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
stroke
cancer
These diseases can all have serious, long-term consequences for our physical and mental health, or even our lives.
Preventing Common Diseases in Elderly Adults
Many of the factors that contribute to or cause chronic illness (such as genetics) are out of our control. However, sticking to healthy aging strategies can help reduce the risk of getting sick, thus allowing you or your loved ones to live independently as long as possible. To give yourself the best shot at staying healthy, stick to the following guidelines:
eat a healthy diet
exercise regularly
avoid smoking and other forms of tobacco use
see your doctor regularly
maintain an active, socially engaged lifestyle
