Assisted Living: Pros and Cons
It's a choice that most seniors are faced with at some point: whether to enter a continuing care or assisted living facility, or whether to continue living independently and age in place.
Of course, there's no right answer to that decision, although that doesn't make the choice itself any easier.
Previously, we've written about the drawbacks and benefits of aging in place at home. Here, we'll cover the other side of the equation, and give a brief overview of the pros and cons of assisted living.
Advantages of Assisted Living:
Access to care and support. Retirement communities and assisted living facilities are designed for residents who may struggle with some daily activities, but are still able to do some or most things independently. And in the event of an emergency, you have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that someone will always be there to help.
Group living setting. Social connection is an essential part of overall well-being, and living in a community of other seniors may provide opportunities for socialization that might not be available otherwise.
Amenities. Many retirement communities or assisted living facilities offer access to things like fitness centers, on-site restaurants, activities, and more.
Disadvantages of Assisted Living:
Lack of privacy. Even in communities that offer separate apartments or residences, many seniors are still concerned about losing their sense of privacy and independence.
Cost. Estimates place the cost of independent living communities around $1,500-$4,000 per month, and assisted living facilities can run anywhere from $3,500-$10,500. For some people, those numbers simply aren't feasible.
Having to leave your home behind. For people with strong emotional ties to their home and belongings, the thought of having to move out of their house and downsize is nothing short of heartbreaking.
There Is Another Option
Many people think that the choice between a senior care facility and aging in place necessarily entails a tradeoff of some kind—either sacrificing their independence and privacy for the quality of care they need, or forgoing assistance and security to remain at home or save money. But what if there was a third option, one that allowed older adults to receive personalized, comprehensive care while also remaining comfortable in their own homes?
